Did you know that 72 million children
in the world do not have an opportunity to attend school each day?
Nearly half of them live in
Africa. The World
Leaders signed an agreement that by 2015 every child would receive an
education - something that our children can take for granted.
Unfortunately, we are still a long way off the final ‘goal' of education
for all. Therefore,
Stanah school took part in the 1 GOAL ‘Send my friend to school'
campaign, which took place during the World Cup period.
On Thursday the 4th and Friday
the 5th of February, the children from Year 4 at Stanah Primary
School went on their annual trip to York and Richmond. The purpose of the trip
is to support the children's learning in History and Geography. In History, the
children have been studying the Roman invasion and occupation of Britain and
learning what life was like in Britain at that time. While in Geography, the
children have been carrying out a range of field studies around the Thornton
area and they were going to compare this data with another locality.
Young people from 81 countries took part with the aim of answering over 50 million maths questions correctly via the internet. Throughout the day, the whole of Stanah school took turns to answer the questions and managed to answer a staggering 241,845 questions between them. Liz Clitherow, deputy head at Stanah, said: "The response from the children has been absolutely amazing. They have been playing the game on-line every evening and over the weekend for six weeks. All the children's confidence has increased and many of them want to continue after the challenge day. One of our year six pupils, Corey answered over 23,500 questions correctly, what an amazing achievement"
Fifteen Stanah pupils were rewarded for their good behaviour and excellent work with a trip to help develop the new Hawthorne Park on March 6th. The pupils helped the Wyre Rangers to plant trees and bushes so that the new park will be an enjoyable place for all the residents of Thornton.
